Default Fad Diets

“Fad Diets”

“New” Atkins Diet ---- Dr. Robert Atkins
Most famous fad diet
Restricts CHO
w/ major restrictions on F & V, whole grains, legumes & low fat dairy
Primary focus: high protein, use of V & M supplements
Promotes their products….low carb bars & food products
Contradicts health promotion & disease prevention

Zone Diet ---- Barry Sears, MD
Promotes a “balanced nutritional approach”
“Zone” refers the state in which the body is at its physical peak –of course from following the diet
Complex eating plan
divides 40% CHO- 30% PRO- 30% FAT
Compared to most diet plans – not that “bad”
very complicating, frustrating
constantly measuring out foods and counting kcals

The South Beach Diet ----- Arthur Agaston, MD
3 phases:
1. Bans CHO such as fruit, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta & baked goods.
Allows normal portions meat, poultry, shellfish, vege, egg & nuts
Promoting weight loss of 8-13lbs in 2 weeks during “detoxification”
2. Reintroduces “Good” CHO ----using the GI as a reference
Expecting to continue weight loss of 1-2lbs/wk until goal
3. Least restrictive – allowing anything in moderation
??? do you suspect they’ll regain?
Theory – the faster the CHO digest, the more weight is gained.
Diet is a low-calorie 1400-1500 kcal/day

Dangerous – weight loss in the first phase, while 2nd & 3rd emphasizes consistent meals, snacks & good variety of foods.

Sugar Busters
Basically – all sugar is toxic (complex CHO & starch)
Emphasis - excess insulin -> weight gain, increase cholesterol – referring to high GI
lists of acceptable foods and foods to avoid
14 day sample meal plan & recipes
They say diet is o.k. for children, preg. women, diabetes, cv disease.
They are using the CHO/insulin response theory as a cause of wt. gain/obesity
No evidence for this in persons with normal pancreatic function
--we know it is likely due to decrease PA and increase Kcal

What are your thoughts on the "Master Cleanse" a.k.a the "Lemonaide Diet"? I was more interested in it for the cleansing benefits...if any. I was reading up on it and it claims to be beneficial by giving your body and digestive system and flush and a rest, so to speak. I read Beyonce did it for her role in Dream Girls and dropped 20lbs, but I'm sure maybe alot of it was water weight? Again, the theory of cleaning out the toxins and flushing out my system sounds cool. Wacked or Fact?
Thanks...
Oh, in a nutshell the 10 day fast consists of a liquid diet of purified water, organic lemons, grade A maple syrup, and cayenne pepper.

I honestly never heard of it, fads are really just that fads. Let me take a look at the diet, if you have a link or something post it.

I have tried fads like these before and they do work, but once you start putting food back into your system the weight comes right back on. I wouldn't recommend doing any fasting if you are looking to lose weight because it will mess with your metabolism. When your body is deprived of food it will start storing everything as a defense mechanism. This is why you gain the weight back so fast. Hope this helps!!

That's not good...the body clinging onto fat!
I was more interested in a cleansing or a flush type dealio, but I suppose no matter how it's presented I would basically be fasting...starving.

Yes. I don't want to use the word diet anymore or be on a "diet"! Just yesterday my mom asks when I was going to stop "dieting" and I explained that I was not "dieting" just eating better.

You know the problem with the word diet is that people think that it is a temporary thing to get off a few lbs. However, a lot of us know that if we want to keep ourselves healthy it is not called a "diet" it is our lifestyle.

yes. We're young now, but if we don't establish healthy eating patterns it will catch up with us as we age.

Fad diets are the biggest joke, but they are also huge money makers, so they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

It's all about balance and moderation, something which fad diets lack completely.
