I finally decided to register for the 4th Annual
X-Country Marathon, 30K, Half-Marathon & 5K Sunday, November 18, 2007 I will of course be running the marathon. I have 11 days to train for this. the 25 mile weeks have helped, but... I plan on taking it fairly easy and will treat it like a long run. I don't want to kill myself, but I wont be strolling either. My last two long runs were 13 miles and they felt great. I somehow convinced the wife to volunteer. So, pics to follow. ![]()

I did it. What an adventure. Running an off-road marathon was nothing like the road race. My joints feel good with the soft surfaces, but my muscles are toast.
There were up-hills and down hills. Somehow there was more up then down i think. There were patches with dirt, but it was worn away unevenly, then there were places with roots across. For the most part it was double trail and some places were very grassy. Others were typical Florida trail, sand on the trail and grass on the side. The worst of it was the 1/2 mile of sugar sand leading to the finish area, that we had to go through twice. my wife worked the water station there, and she did a great job. the other women there were terrific too. I think they were all new at the volunteering game, so they threw their hearts into it and it showed. There was a lot of energy there. Which by then, we desperately needed. They said that my wife found her "inner cheerleader" so she had fun too. It might have been a good idea to get a trail shoe, that was designed to grip dirt. I wasted a lot of energy because I couldn't get much foot power. My stride was different than i use for road running. Whenever there was a bit of flat grassy trail, I opened it up. But that wasn't a lot. There was a lot of shade, but that seemed to disappear when the afternoon came. At about mile six or seven, the halfies started to catch up. They started a half hour behind us, but the leader flew by like he was on a track. It was awesome to watch, but hard to bear that he would be fully rested by the time I came by the finish line and started my second lap. Once locked into the second lap, it really was a fun run. the stupid girls and their constant chatter were all gone. i really don't need to hear about miscarriages and cheating spouses on a marathon run, especially in a high pitched wheezy yell. It was such a beautiful area, the quiet running wa enough. I am glad I left the headphones at the start line. I did bring the ipod with the nike+ though. Body check: my lungs still burn. my core muscles are sore, like I had the flu and have been coughing and throwing up. My whole torso is sore. My hamstrings tightened up, from a lack of a good stride, and my calves had huge knots in the side, from having to stabilize. I am so blessed not to have twisted anything. I hit a pot hole that could have ended my day, but I was relaxed and didn't take the shock in my back like I have before on uneven pavement. The bad news: I believe the course was a bit over 26.2. My ipod read 28.17, that's two miles over and my iPod is usually short .2 per 7 miles. So It was more like 29 i bet. Also my polar was reading high as well until it crapped out, AGAIN. this time it was the foot pod. I am willing to bet it just ran out of juice. but on freshly recharged batteries? This is the second time i do not have readings for the marathon. I did get time and hr. But because there was no distance, the lap counter did not get triggered so the data for the end of the race was gone. Oddly though, I got 23 miles in before it died. it might have made it if the distance were correct. But what this also means is tht I have no way to compare times. I finished in 5:00:56, or so ;) when i saw the 5 on the clock, I kicked into gear. If there were a clock on course earlier, I might have broke into the fours. However if the course was 3 miles long, that would cut about a half hour off my time. If that is the case, even with all the walking and gel breaks, I would have been fine. I am confident that in February that I will break 4 hours. But yesterday was about fun, and trying out some strategies. I ran a 7 mile tempo run the night before. Next time I will blow out a shorter run, but keep it fast. the clif bar gels were yummy, but they were too thick. It took too long to get them out of the tube, and then took a lot of water to swallow. i will stick with powerbar Double latte, unless I find something better. I wore my under armour socks, rather than a thin liner and I like that, they gave my toes room. Speaking of feet. I did end up with a big blister on my left big toe. i felt it at mile ten. It never broke, and it is going away already. But my pinky toe on my right foot is probably going to lose the nail. i will look for my epsom salts when I am done writing this. Another strategy I tried was going out a little faster than last time. i wanted to see how long I could keep a 9 minute pace. if you look at the graph of my run, it continually slows down from 9:30 for the first 4 miles through the tens and right before the cliff, I was at 11 min/mile. the cliff came at mile 22. the hills got to me. the rebound for the last 3 miles were mental in nature. A true warrior can dig deep for the energy to succeed. Shaw
