If a drink contains a glucose polymer like malodextrin rather than a simple sugar it minimizes the negative effects of concentreated sugar molecules on gastric emptying and maintains plasma volume. Short chained polymers ( 3 to 20 glucose units) derived from cornstarch breakdown reduce the numer of particules in the solution which will failitate water movement from the stomach into the small intestine for absorption.
That was a pretty intense question you asked there.
