Talking new tool, the rice steamer!

I picked up a rice steamer at Sam's for $17. It has a big ol dent in the side, that could easily be pulled out PDR style. it normally sells for $24. I'm not saying that you should go to Sam's and kick the stack of rice steamers, but that's what it looks like.

Anyway, I mad a couple batches of rice, and it is soooo easy. I need to use a smidge less than 2:1 water:rice my last batch stayed kinda wet. It cooks brown rice too. the best part is that it has a basket on top that you can put veggies into, to steam them. So I put summer squash, carrots, Bok Choy, green peppers, mushrooms all in the basket. when the rice and veggies were done, I mixed them and ate them with my chicken breasts. I am going to see if this thing will cook the breasts if I thaw them first. If it will, it would be a super simple meal in a pot.

I also want to figure out how I am going to get artichokes into the steamer, because that would be the bomb to have a simple way to cook those. If you've never had an artichoke, you are missing out on one of natures secrets. they are healthy, hard to eat and taste terrific.

Now to learn how to make Dim sum I have green beens for the next meal. and I think that steamed greens are in my future.

What kind of rice did you cook. I noticed that on some ricers you have to use less than 2:1 sushi rice for instance in my cooker never comes out good with a 2:1 ratio.

Are you eating the whole artichoke or the small center part? The whole artichoke is easier to braise than it is to steam, whereas the center part can be steamed.

I love the whole artichoke, usually I put them in a pot of water with a strainer holing them up. Once I partially steamed them, then stuffed them and baked them. yummy.

whats a braise?

Me and my roommate just tossed a bunch of my frozen mixed vegetables into the rice steamer with the rice... both came out perfectly.. threw that over the top of some teryaki chicken.. MMm.. ate that twice so far this week for dinner.

I looooove rice steamers. Soo easy.

Brasing is sauteeing in a small amount of fat, then adding liquid and covering until the item is cooked through.

Artichokes can be made in this manner, I will saute in either olive oil or bacon fat..mmmm , and then stuff and cover with either tomato sauce and chicken broth, or just chicken broth.
