Thanks for the welcome. There are so many places to post about fitness that it's no surprise if the traffic dips at times.

WHEN I WAS A KID! It's amazing how much information is available today. I had to search for muscle magazines as a teenager. There were no contests in my local area. And the Mr. Olympia winner received a check for a thousand bucks.

How did you become a moderator here? What was your introduction to weights, exercise, and fitness?

i don't think my mod status and health history are completely connected.

lets see when i was a kid i was a nerd. when I got to high school I joined the swim team as a frosh, swam all 4 years. junior year, I thought I was a jock so i did hell week and tried out or football. active scrimmage ended that dream. however i did discover the weight room. I joined my first gym at 17 and though i got pretty strong, I never got to 165 in bodyweight. I guess i wasn't doing it right.

Later, I got a mountain bike and some roller blades and rode the mountains and bike trails in CT.
In 96 I spent the summer riding the rolling hills of NC. I intended to go to Tampa on bike, but I forgot to plan and I did a 3 day journey from Raleigh to Myrtle Beach.

When I got to Tampa and went to college, I had the school gym at my disposal. Morning workouts, then evening Karate. I spent more time in the gym than in class. I should have gotten a PE major.

graduated, got sober in 2001, got fat in 2004 and started running in 2005, did my first 5K in 5/06 then a marathon in 2/07. I just can't stop running now. I'm up to 60+ miles a week.

So I dabble, a bit of everything. Honestly I have to say, that I was in great shape in Karate, and I am in the best shape of my life now.

OK, your turn

I'm still very much a nerd. ;)

In high school I was on the cross country team all four years. Even got a varsity letter the one year (I think there were a number of broken legs that season).

Never tried football but went out for the wrestling team in my senior year... with no experience. While everyone else was saying, "We're going to wrestling practice," I was saying, "I'm going to go and get my @$$ kicked. Again." With a 0 and 3 record, I resigned from the team. Wiser and with a greater respect for that sport.

I was 6' and 150 when I got my first vinyl and concrete weight set. I'm 6'1" and about 190 now. I'd say the forty pounds extra is all around my waist. D'OH!

Served in the U.S. Navy 1983-1988, college 1988-1992, factory and retail jobs (directionless with my BA in art) 1992-1997, back to school to earn my certification to teach followed by subbing as a teacher 1997-2002, full-time as an elementary school art teacher from 2002 to present.

Never a problem with drinking per se, but also "got sober" recently - no alcohol this year at all and only 3 Budweisers in 2007. Plus, I'm not sure Bud really qualifies as alcohol, so...

Never been fat either. Not really, but did become "skinny fat". Dropped from about 185 to 150 from August 2007 to November 2007 in what I like to call a "stupid human trick."

Cardio, low cals, 3-times per week weight workouts:

That's November 2007 on the left and early 2008 on the right.

And then jumped back up to about 185 with more weights, but this time not as much "skinny" nor as much "fat."

No sport, unfortunately. I lift to keep in shape and, hopefully, improve my shape.
