Default New guy, runner

Hey, new here. I'm a runner. Lost 60 pounds last year then started running. Within 11 months of my weight loss I ran the Seattle Marathon. Just looking to add muscle. People now say I'm to skinny cause I run so much. 5'10.5" 160 lbs.

thanks...

Welcome to the forum. I like your user name. Anyways thats quite an accomplishment that you did last year. I noticed you posted up a storm last night also. You'll find some good info here. What does your current strength training protocol look like?

I usually run 4-5 days a week and lift the other days. If I get slight pains I switch to elliptical. I do find upper body workouts to help my running. I'm a smart runner, using my arms correctly. I do know world class marathoners in my town that NEVER lift, which is odd to me. But hey, he's won 8 straight Seattle Marathons......

I think strength training is extremely important for marathons. Especially new runners mostly to help keep a good strong core.

Hey Pre, welcome.

I was looking at your times and they don't add up. When did you run that 5k? because based on your other times you really crushed that 5k. with an 18 minute 5K I would expect to see your marathon closer to the three hour mark.

good to see another runner on board. even though my user title says marathoner, I was getting my blanket while you were finishing up your post race massage.

My races went like this
july 2006 1/2 1:44:00
sept 2006 1/2 1:41:00
nov 2006 Full 3:49:43
may 2007 1/2 1:33:49
may 2007 5k 19:26
june 2007 6.7 mile 44:35
july 2007 2 races in one day (4 mile 25:42 5k in 18:53)
july 2007 1/2 1:38
aug 2007 5k 19:02
sept 2007 1/2 1:35

So I haven't ran another marathon to see what my time would be.
Believe me, running twice the distance doesn't always translate like you'd think. I think I can do a 3:35 full right now.

There is a formula on Runner's world that predicts paces and times based on other race paces and times. It's been accurate for myself and my friends, but when I saw an 18:53 5K it stuck out.

also, If you can run an 18 two months after a 19 and after a 4 mile race, I wonder if you are not warming up enough normally.

Well an 18:00 is far from a 18:53.

well its peas and carrots away from a 26:26, which is the time I run.

I was just too lazy to scroll up. but still to run a PR on a day when you already ran... hmmm.

Well I ran a PR, but had only run one 5k before it. In my first 5k I had no clue how to pace. The second 5k, when I ran two races I just went out to have fun and see what happens. I think how my tummy muscles are doing played into it more than my legs being tired or sore. Prefontaine always said the 5k is a pure guts race........
I'm a miler from HS, so I think I excell at the shorter distances. It just doesn't always translate all the way up to full marathons.
My best friend ran a 3:47 1500 in college, still has yet to run a full marathon and his best half is 1:42. I'm sure if he gets back into shape he could challenge me at that distance, but he loves the beers to much so I think I'm safe.
