Default Not MMA but Krav Maga

I had my first 2 sessions last night and this looks like something I could really get into. It seems I need tons and tons of cardio as I was very winded. This is my first actual martial arts training, fyi.

I love Krav Maga, and it is way more useful in real life than MMA

Yep I agree. I was looking into an MMA gym, but I know I'd never actually compete so the practicality of Krav is what attracted me.

I watched Human Weapon on the History channel (actually I DL'd it) all 6 episodes, the last one was on Krav Maga. I trained Shotokan Karate, but KM looked very interesting. On the street, I think any well trained art will be useful. MMA and such can be helpful, but there is no way I would want to be locked up with an attacker. I want to be able to strike and run. Sparring in Shotokan is like playing toy guns. I would throw a punch, but I would have to pull it, where my TKD partner would kick me or something and I wouldnt be able to resopond full force, so there was nothing to stop them. I dont know if Iam explaining it, but point sparring is a helluva lot different than trying to kill someone. SHotokan trains for the ippon, one shot kill. but it's hard to practice and still have friends.

I saw the same episode of Human Weapon, I set it on my DVR to record when it comes on. This was by far one of my favorite ones. Seems really intense. Jon - Am I to assume that it's a toned down version from the television.

I just downloaded that show/episode and yeah, they were taught in a more condensed fashion. Krav has a belt system just like any other martial arts and you have to test up for the next one. I dont think it's watered down at all, my instructor is pretty intense. I'd assume if I were to reach black belt, I'd know how to do everything shown on that show. Also, they were training at a military base so yeah, I'm not sure that's even comparable with a public, family gym haha. Good stuff though.

Striking today. New combo learned, groin-kick->hammer fist->knee. It's good stuff. It's pretty much an hour of training with like 4 30 seconds breaks! I can really see how bad my cardio is =P

i am doing Krav and i am told there is no belt system or anything... so i dont know what ur instructor or w/e is talking about... It is all about what u do on the street and real situations, what is a belt going to do?? idk just what my instructor said on the first night

Maybe its trying to reward individuals for staying and learning more. But I could see a no belt system.

belts are for americans that like to prove that they are better than the new guy.

it's also a great way to sell belts, patches, etc.

I guess in this one they're using belts more as a ranking to see where you're at more than anything. :dunno
