Since Josh and crew were kind enough to make this forum and subforum I thought this would be a good place for this. I'll try to keep this thread going as a "diary" of my trials and tribulations of learning how to fight, good days in the gym, bad days in the gym etc...
MMA and me, up to now. I joined my gym http://www.crawfordsmma.com in mid August when I decided I'd gotten "fluffy" enough and had to do something about it. Most of my friends aren't the most active people and I was up to 184.(I'm 5'7") Heaviest I've ever been. I joined with no intentions of fighting, that has now changed... Since I've joined, I've been going 3x a week for ~2 hours each time. We generally do 30 min of cardio, an hour of Ju Jitsu instruction, then "roll" for 30 min. Basically put out JJ into practice. It amazes me how effective this martial art is. It also amazes me to know how much I've learned and how much I have yet to even scratch the surface on. My goal is to fight in February or March now. Ideally I would fight at 155, but I'm not sure that is going to happen. After joining the gym I dropped to ~170, but now I'm back up to ~177-178, and I'm a LOT leaner than before. I just finished a case of muscle milk, and I think thats the last time I take protein... I have no problem bulking up on my own. So we shall see. Currently, my JJ is coming along nicely, and I've learned that my standup is PATHETIC. Getting hit with boxing gloves doesn't really hurt, I just tense p way too much. Its a process and I'm learning. Regardless, come time for my first fight... I'm taking that sucker down as fast as I can. I'll update this thread if I have anything note worthy to add... goals, accomplishment, injuries(worth mentioning) etc... I figured this could turn into a nice resource for anyone looking to get into the sport. Happy punching!(and kicking, and sweeping and armbaring, and knee baring, and kimura-ing, and guillotine-ing, and RNC-ing, and scarf choking etc... :blackeye <-- me last week) |

The original plan was late Feb/early March. I'm thinkin early to mid march now as I've got so much going on and I'm going sking in Feb for a week. There's a part of me that wants to set a date as a goal, and there's another part that says don't fight until you're ready. I mean hell... as of today, I've only been doing it for 5 months! Part of this "wait til ready" comes from one of my training partners shattered eye socket... I'll still fight in the first part of the year, I just don't have a date. There is at least one fight every weekend in KC, so finding one is not going to be a problem at all. I'd also like to get to a few of the shows so I can get a feel for the venues, how long they let the fights go etc...

Good luck man. What weight class will you be fighting in for your first fight? 170 has some BIG dudes....

Our pros are starting to come to the gym more.... So far this week Curtis Stout, Rob Kimmons and John Cornett have been around. Rob and John are big on the local scene, and I wouldn't be suprised if they make the jump to an org like the UFC soon. I've heard rumors about Rob lately. Curtis, on the other hand, has fought Rich Franklin, David Louiseau, Phil Baroni, and Anderson Silva to name a few. Kinda cool having the big names back in the gym. I'm assuming that they have fights coming up. Too bad I fought like crap today :( I got picked up about shoulder high and slammed down, and I also managed to spike my head on the mat. Rough day in the office! :D

Update.... I haven't fought or really made any progress towards doing so. I still want to, but at this point I'm not putting a date on it. Work and injuries have conspired to keep me out of the gym.
I had a chance to spar with John Cornett and Rob Kimmons almost 2 weeks ago. Rob completely dominated me and put me in the deepest arm bar I've ever been in. I fought it, but then he broke it loose and it hyperextended quite badly, so I've been nursing that. All our pros fought on Friday night at http://tfc.tv Everyone but Curtis won. He was knocked out with 3 seconds left in the first round. Other than that, we completely DOMINATED the night. 10 and 1 isn't a bad way to leave the evening. Watching that motivated me to really train hard again, but then I had some back spasms yesterday while helping a friend move, so its back to getting healthy again. |

Thanks and will do! Elbows are very prone to injury in this sport and I have accepted that. Coincidently, they were the only joints I hadn't injured to some extent in the past. I've been taking it easy, its just little things... Elbow, then last weekend my friends cat chomped on my thumb a few times and it bled and swelled up, then my back! I just need to live in a bubble for a week!
2 I'm hitting it hard tomorrow, I can feel my body regressing in terms of cardio and build. |
