Default MMA events

How many of you have ever been involved in MMA or been around someone who has been?

I was contacted about being in an event during the end of August, but I can't do it :(

I was wondering how long of a time you train hard to get ready for an event and what exactly you do for your training.

Involved for almost a year now. IMO you would be stupid to enter an event against someone who has any training if you have none. I have my first fight coming up in 10 days. Some say you should have a minimum of 6 months before stepping into the ring/cage. You always have a punchers chance, but if the guy has any ground game at all, you will be in trouble very quickly. I work Ju jitsu, and kickboxing the most, but we also work a lot on positioning and how to work up against the cage and how to make sure you are protected when engaged with someone. There is a never ending amount of things to learn in this sport. I highly suggest you find a gym and get some training in before you seriously consider a fight. If you don't at least do that, make sure your cardio is through the roof for your fight. :wave Lemme know if you have any questions for me, I'd love to answer them for you!

Well I'm a league champ wrestler at 285 when I weighed 210. I box occassionally but have never taken classes for it. I was thinking about trying out Thai boxing and ju jitsu.

I want to fight at 185 in the spring, which shouldn't be too hard because there aren't hydration tests :)

Wrestling is a damn good base, but I really think JJ will round out the game for you. Wrestlers tend to give up their backs by habit and thats a no no in MMA. You want to be on your back in JJ if you are on bottom. It also really helps with positioning. Its one thing to try and punch someone while on the ground. Its another thing to know you have complete control over where they go, how they get there and to do it all with a knee in their ribs while punching their face. :D Since you wrestled, I have no doubt you are familiar with cutting weight, but 210 to 185 is a big drop!

I see JJ and wrestling have very similiar background but yet they are so apart. Especially with going from wrestling to the other or the other way around. Theodore, did you have this problem when you first started MMA?

To me now, the similarity almost ends with the fact that they both are ground techniques. Completely different goals and whereas in wrestling youtry to pin your opponent, thats just a nice rest in ju jitsu. There is no end to ways you can make someone tap out!

To be honest, my view on the transition is going to be biased since I've never seen a JJ guy switch to pure wrestling. We get a LOT of guys that have wrestled coming to the gym. They get all gung ho, get a big take down and have absolutely no clue what to do from there. Then its easy pickings... haha. I've had a minor concussion from a wrestler on his first day since he thought he needed to prove himself. I didn't really have an issue when I started at the gym since my only wrestling background was from middle school (7th and 8th grades). I do still get asked if I was a wrestler for what its worth....

Wrestling is more of a standing technique in my opinion. From what I see in UFC, and espicially PRIDE, etc, is that alot of standing movements deal with wrestling. I see even the best of strikers go for a single leg, let someone try to sprawl on it, and let them go to pummel their face while they are at a low level.

The biggest differences I see in MMA from wrestling are you don't want a low stance, you dont need wrist control, and you want to be on your back; all of which I don't think would be too hard for someone to correct if they work hard at it.

Although, i really don't know shit about it, this is all back seat driving.

BTW, how well does a russian tie work in MMA?

It's a solid solid base to go into the sport with... thats undoubtable. Hughes, Trigg, Couture, Jackson, Liddell, Henderson all were great wrestlers before going into MMA and thats approaching a who's who of UFC.

As long as you are somewhat athletically gifted, which you appear to have no issues with, you are spot on with your assessment. Its just going to take a bit of concentration to get old habits out and new ones in. Wrist control is important in JJ though. Just watch, take notes and learn! :D Do find a gym, as with most things, doing it is the best way to learn!

Well that's good because I'm great at getting it

Is the Russian tie effective in MMA?
