Today was a mountain bike ride, so there's not a whole lot to report on. 3.5 hours total, w/ total elevation gain of about 2,000 feet. The ride up is a fire road that is pretty wide, so it's boring and uneventful. The ride down on our first loop took us down another fire road, up some narrow single track, and down a rutted out double track. We found our way back to the original starting point and headed back up the original road.
Now, my dumbass, for some reason, didn't eat breakfast. I also didn't bring enough water, so by the time the second climb started, I was out of water and out of energy. It wasn't to the point where I couldn't go on, but my pace was slow and I felt like crap. We took some really narrow singletrack on the way down, lots of stream crossings, steep and rocky sections, and plenty of long falls if you mess up and veer off the track. My friend actualy snagged his bar on a tree and fell off a section. I could have sworn he was going to be dead, but somehow he escaped w/ some cuts and brusises. I'll have to post pictures of the trail sometime. Plenty of action. This really doesn't count as part of the training log, though. Just an update on what I did today. Total distance ridden was about 15 miles. If there is anything to remember, it's stay hydrated and make sure you've got food in your system. There is no worse feeling than hitting that wall because you didn't fuel your body properly or having a headache the rest of the day because you didn't hydrate properly. Tomorrow is a road bike ride, I'll try and take some pictures and post the details of the ride (distance, time, etc.) |

Alright, details details.
I left at 12:30 and headed over to a street called Lida. If you look at the map, you'll see "Brookside Golf Course". The twisty road heading East is Lida, and it's a pretty short climb followed by a fun downhill. Where the road starts heading North is Chevy Chase. It's a pretty fun climb, but it reminds me of something important to remember when you're working out: Your mind controls your body. Don't focus on what is ahead, focus on what you're doing at that moment. The climb on Chevy Chase is only a few miles, but your mind knows that it's only the start of the ride. You start defeating yourself before you even get to the hard part if you focus on what is ahead. Do what you're doing don't let the futures pain defeat you in the present. 10 miles into the ride is where Angeles Crest Hwy. starts. If you take a look at the map, it's right around the 210 (Foothill) freeway. From there it's about 19 miles of climbing untill Mt. Wilson. I ate a banana at the top and headed back home. All in all, the ride was close to 60 miles. I drank 65oz. of water and 40oz. of gatoade. I ate one peanut butter and jelly sandwich (on wheat bread) before the ride and one banana during the ride. After returning I ate chicken, california rolls and plenty of water. Here's a picture (not taken by me) of the view you're rewarded with at the top of Wilson. ![]() That's it for now, I'll update w/ whatever workout I squeeze in before bed. |

Today was a short mountain bike ride, and in a few minutes I'll be going to the rock climbing gym to get a nice climbing workout. I am thinking about doing the 100 mile ride this Saturday in Ventura before work as conditioning for the following weekends 100 mile in Death Valley. Like I said, my main goal this year is the 200 mile ride in Death Valley this September. I've also planned out a 145 mile ride through the Valley, over the mountains into Malibu and then along the coast until Newport, and then over into Irvine. That will probably happen in April. Till then, I need to get back to the gym, I've neglected the weights lately. |

Sunday: The Tour of California race was happening in Long Beach, so we rode down there to check it out. We averaged about 20mph, I think, and it was an 80 mile ride. Good workout, to say the least.
Monday: Chest and Triceps at the gym. Light weight, since I've been slacking on weight training. Here's what we do... Starting weight (we'll use bench press as an example) was 115. I do 8 slow reps, have my spotter drop the weight to 105, do 8 more, drop the weight to 95 and do 8 more. Then we drop the weight to 75 and do a burnout set, as many reps as possible. Our first three sets are nice and slow, with good form and control. There is no rest in between sets, only as long as it takes for the spotter to drop the weights, so it is a high intensity workout. On the final burnout set, it's fast and explosive. We do this routine for everything: incline, flat and decline bench, and for machine flys. Same with out triceps routine; skull crushers, cable pulldowns and overhead dumbell press, with dips to round off the workout. All in all, it takes only an hour, but it's pretty brutal. Not resting between sets really makes the workout tough. Although this may not be for everyone, it works great for me and compliments my cycling. We finished the day with some core exercises: One set of decline situps/crunches followed immediatly by back extensions. Rest 15 seconds and repeat. Another high intensity workout that really gets you quickly. We did a total of four sets of each. I did 10 minutes on the eliptical trainer on very low resitance. Since I did 80 miles on my bike the day before, I just wanted to move my legs a little to alleviate the stiffness. Tuesday: ![]() I rode to my buddies house, which is about 10 miles, all uphill. It usualy isn't bad, but today it sucked. There was a strong headwind the whole way there, so I was beat. I put my road bike in his garage and we threw our mountain bikes into his truck. We headed over to some local fire roads/singletrack. The climb took about 1:10 (it usualy takes less than an hour, but I was beat) and the way down was a blast. We took a ton of pictures, so I'll be sure to post them up. That's it for today. I am gonna stretch and go to bed. I'm gonna rest for a few days before this weekend. |
