This is a great question. Here is what you should do heard over to our resources sub forum and download the Target Heart Rate and Running PDF fill out the the spots for the equation and set the intensity for around 60 which is 60 percent of your max heart rate. I would then suggest ideally that you try to build up to do at the min 45 mins of cardio. But to answer your question yes slow long duration exercise is best for using fat as an energy source.

Also, keep your joints in mind. Going from no running to a lot of running beats your body up quite a bit. Ease into things, and you'll be able to run/jog injury free for a long time

to burn more fat you would want to target your heart rate to around 55 - 60% of your max heart rate to really use fat as a substrate and it would need to be at a min of 45 mins before you would actually use lipids as an energy source. On the other hand your concerned about losing weight and that is simple calories used used compared to calories that you took in. You really have to look at what will burn the most calories for you, keep in mind also that exercise is like a supplement to proper nutrition. The real gains are going to be seen when you are able to get control of your nutrition.
