Default Cardio Equipment, How Accurate.

Hey, i was just wondering how accurate the cardio equipment is at gyms (ex. treadmills, EFX, bikes.) for calories Burned. Is that 100% accurate of how much calories you burned in that time period?

It's ballpark but not extremely accurate. The best way to really gauge how many calories are burned is for every liter of oxygen your body uses you burn 5 calories. But most machines come from this type of understanding so their ballpark at best.

yeah i really wouldn't rely on it so much. running a mile burns less that 100 calories in my opinion.

Ithink what is funny is that you go from a looking at a little readout on a treadmill to trying to figure out how many liters of O2 you have used and multiply that by five.

My polar rs200sd seems to be extremly accurate when it comes to distances, and I think it may be accurate in other areas as well. It has an estimate of calories burned, and without knowing the exact formula it uses, it is still an estimate. However with the factors of age, weight, distance, heartrate, and time, I am thinking it is pretty close. Usually when compared to the treadmill readout, they were similar. If you entered in the age and weight, I would bet your machine is close.

But I wouldnt let the readout allow you to have that extra cookie.

I agree completely about them being quite similiar if you really want to keep track will. I would invest in a polar heart rate monitor. This was you are always using the same monitor which is very helpful.
