as a researcher who is currently in the process of having my work published, i am on the side which uses credible sources to reference an argument, theory, hypothesis, or opinion.
sparknotes isn't a credible source.
wikipedia often cites primary sources and therefore are 100% more credible than sparknotes. here is why: if i search wikipedia for X and then read the information they have listed on X, i can often find their citations. if i read those articles cited i can see where the summaries and theories located on their site came from.
